Installation, audio, immersion, video, environment.

There is a tendency towards elitism in modern art - we desire to break through with a playful nature and invitation to explore. We invite you to come and touch our stuff.

Surround, our second collaboration, is based on the premise that art should engage more of the senses than the visual. This exhibition aims to create a total space the artwork consumes, such that there is almost no place a person would not find themselves within a piece of art. We want people to experience a sense of fun as they interact, to be transformed into part of the artwork itself, and so undergo an Experience.

We sought to explore the subtlety of white and its contrasts, while reaffirming the value of relationship, both as meaning in the works and in the placement of works with the public.

The entire installation is constructed using materials readily accessible to us. This diverse sourcing of materials not only underpins the notion of our journey but the journey of the components themselves and their removal from their original context.

Each of the various artforms involve nature-related themes; Forest of Conversations, Field of Moments, Web and Cave, all of which symbolise the exhibition’s site-specific sense of environment.

forest The Forest of Conversations is constructed from singular heads on poles, reworked from discarded hairdresser mannequins and waste cardboard tubes. Through our natural human tendency to endow the non-human with emotion, the positioning forces an endless series of relationships. The forest is also an audio environment, speaking literally using many recorded conversations, music and sounds.

forestField of Moments, highlighting series of drawings by Jasmin, waves in the breeze like an uncropped meadow. To move through the drawings is to traverse time and the extended process used to create them. It is impossible to walk through them without disrupting them.

webWeb of Portraits utilises self portraits, created with the pure joy of drawing for drawing’s sake, no need to be exact, no desire to perform for an audience. Instead of utilising a wall, the 3 dimensional web both displays the work and effects its own journey.

caveCave of Zen creates a special space at the end of the gallery, a silent space where drawings become the structural confines rather than being a work unto themselves. We are asking viewers to create the sense of meaning in Cave by utilising their own drawing on the floor. It is a place both separate and connected to the other works.

streamStream of Consciousness comprises 5 Soundbubbles, a text conversation on the floor, and a series of projected animations. The Soundbubbles are designed to isolate and contain. They come alive with the engagement of the human. Vision is obstructed, the world is defined by the auditory. Standing within them is also standing within the animations and on the text conversation. The animations seek to give another expression to the process of creation of the work.

Upon entering the gallery, visitors are welcome to touch, listen, feel, be privy to the process we went through and the conversations we have engaged in.

We invite you to experience... Surround.
