5x5x5 is an art exhibition and a rock show.
5x5x5 will showcase the work of emerging and established Illawarra-based artists and musicians presenting new, original works.
Poster art and the fine arts have had a long on-again/off-again relationship. From its roots in European lithographic posters of the 1890s, through the invention of cheaper and more available forms of printing, poster art has occupied a space traversing fine art, advertising and political comment. And in the case of rock posters, often all of the above.
Poster art entered one of its most renowned ‘on-again’ periods in the 1960s social, political and musical posters. The ‘flower power-ers’ introduced a host of new influences and moved posters away from the merely functional to the truly decorative and decadent.
During the late 60s and early 70s, Australian poster art developed its own distinctive style, a style that has been recognised as irreverent and subversive. The commercial world didn’t take long to latch on to this style, an expression perhaps best realised in the images created for and used by surf brand ‘100% Mambo’ during the 1980s.
More recently, poster artists face increased challenges to the display of their works in an urban setting, with many council areas banning posters in public spaces.
5x5x5 will present new works by five contemporary artists committed to Australian rock posters, who will demonstrate their own unique expression of a medium that deserves to be acknowledged, admired and collected like the other fine arts.
5x5x5 will feature with a free rock show at the Illawarra’s premier live music venue Waves, 24 April 2010, featuring each of the five bands portrayed in the works. The bands: Babymachine, Bulldoze All Bowlos, Leadfinger, The Nice Folk, Ye Luddites.
Who we are: 5x5x5 is being created by a collective of passionate art and music lovers who decided to deliver a unique arts and cultural experience in the Wollongong region. 5x5x5 aims to provide opportunities for those involved in the alternative arts community, as well as reaching out and engaging with the broader community and increasing the recognition of poster art as a legitimate art form.
The 5x5x5 collective comprises Shane Kenning, Trina Collins, Kristy Newton, Gordon Watt and Edie Nyers.
